Course Description: Precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial African cultures and societies. Gender, ethnicity, and class. Representations and realities of Africa in a global context, including issues of development, conservation, and tourism. Popular culture and contemporary rural and urban experiences. Prerequisite: One introductory course in social science or permission of instructor.
