Professor Omar Dewachi Delivers the Robert’s Lecture at the University of Pittsburgh
On April 10, Professor Omar Dewachi delivered the annual Robert’s Lecture at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, titled “Death of the Clinic: Care in the Ruins of War.” Drawing on long-term ethnographic research, the talk examined how decades of war in Iraq have reshaped the conditions of care, tracing the erosion of the clinic as a stable institutional form. Dewachi showed how care persists across fragmented infrastructures—moving through hospitals, homes, and transnational networks—even as continuity, knowledge, and responsibility become increasingly difficult to sustain. During his visit, he also met with graduate students to discuss public writing and strategies for communicating anthropological research beyond academic audiences.
